Driving Innovation in Hospitality through Technology

Ching Yip

Ching Yip

Ching Yip, Vice President of Information Technology at Hoiana Resort & Golf, is an accomplished IT leader with over 15 years of experience managing large-scale integrated resort operations and technology projects across Asia. Focused on incorporating advanced technology into the hospitality and entertainment industry, he has successfully launched four large-scale integrated resorts between 2008 and 2023. His career highlights include directing IT for the opening of Korea’s Jeju Dream Tower and demonstrating expertise in IT security, infrastructure, applications, operations and service delivery. Yip excels in strategic planning, new product development and IT infrastructure management, consistently transforming businesses and enhancing guest experiences.

In an interview with CIOReview, Yip highlighted how AI-driven solutions, mobile platforms and system integrations enhance efficiency and guest experiences in the hospitality industry. He emphasized the importance of innovation and strategic resource management to drive cost savings, especially during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. Yip also underscored the need to foster talent and provide clear career growth pathways to build a resilient IT team.

Leading Innovations across Asia

My journey has been shaped by the ability to merge innovation with strategic IT management. From my foundational work at City of Dreams Macau and Altira Hotel Macau to expanding operations at City of Dreams Manila Resorts in the Philippines and introducing cutting-edge solutions at Shinhwa World Resorts in Jeju Island, South Korea, every project has deepened my understanding of operational and technological integration.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I demonstrated ingenuity by managing the Korea Jeju Dream Tower/Grand Hyatt Hotel opening. Despite financial constraints, I completed the project with less than 50 percent of the allocated budget by remotely managing international vendors and using thorough cost control methods.

Implementing AI-Powered Auto-Engage Systems

Since most of the integrated systems we deal with involve multiple vendors and disparate processes, my objective has been to consolidate and automate them for greater efficiency. For instance, reviewing the performance of thousands of employees and managing the associated paperwork in HR is a time-intensive task. HR can easily handle everything within a single platform by automating these operations into a unified system.

I liken it to managing multiple credit cards; instead of keeping track of different expiry dates and payments, wouldn’t it be easier to consolidate everything into one solution? Inspired by an article from Ford’s CEO, where over 150 vendors came together to create a seamless EV experience, I aim to replicate this approach for Hoiana’s operations. Just as drivers benefit from an intuitive, unified interface, our goal is to integrate technology so seamlessly that both our team and guests experience effortless interactions.

This vision extends to optimizing guest engagement through AI-powered auto-engage systems, leveraging data analytics and machine learning to enhance operational efficiency and improve guest experiences. By adopting a forward-thinking approach, I ensure Hoiana Resorts remains a leader in integrating cutting-edge technologies to deliver superior guest experiences and drive business growth.

Innovations in Mobile Gaming and Cashless Systems

I oversee transforming the gaming experience by integrating mobile technology and cashless solutions. Understanding the needs of international travelers visiting Vietnam, I am spearheading the development of a fully digital, cardless system to replace traditional membership cards. This innovation eliminates the costs and logistical challenges associated with physical cards, streamlining operations while aligning with global trends driven by platforms like WeChat and Alipay.

Imagine a guest seamlessly accessing casino services through their smartphone—checking in, making transactions and enjoying exclusive perks without ever needing a physical card. This initiative is designed to enhance convenience, security and personalization, creating a sophisticated and automated experience that caters to modern gaming enthusiasts.

Achieving Cost Efficiency Through Strategic Management

When I joined, I noticed that the previous IT team may not have fully understood how the resort operates. They weren’t doing a bad job, but my broader experience across multiple companies gave me a fresh perspective. I started by reviewing all system contracts and digging into the details to identify unnecessary spending and billing errors. By addressing these inefficiencies and renegotiating contracts, I saved a substantial seven-figure sum.

"Understanding the scope of IT in hospitality is crucial—it’s not just about managing computers but optimizing applications to drive results"

In IT, many companies rely on tools they don’t fully understand. Instead, we developed an in-house system tailored to our needs—an approach that’s both smart and cost-effective, though sensitive from a security standpoint.

During the pandemic, while opening the Jeju gym tower, resources were tight and we had to operate efficiently. Unlike Macau, where gaming thrives with ease, our foreign casino relies on travelers flying in, requiring a smarter strategy. I streamlined operations, reduced team layers and cut redundant systems, saving on both human resources and costs.

This lean, practical approach has been key to overcoming challenges and positioning us for sustainable growth.

Building and Training an IT Team

A strong IT team is a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. I prioritize qualities like a willingness to learn and a career-focused mindset. Clear career path planning helps my team understand their roles and development opportunities. By aligning individual growth with the company’s goals, I motivate my team to excel.

I also prioritize local talent, believing everyone has unique skills to contribute. My approach is rooted in career development rather than task delegation. Training and empowering individuals to succeed in their roles is central to my leadership strategy. Organizational structure plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and collaboration, ensuring team members feel supported and aligned with our broader objectives.

Advice for Young Professionals in Hospitality IT

Understanding the scope of IT in hospitality is crucial—it’s not just about managing computers but optimizing applications to drive results. Emerging technologies like AI are changing the industry, automating repetitive tasks and enhancing operational efficiency.

To young professionals, my advice is to focus on mastering these technologies and rethinking traditional methods. At Hoiana, we’re working on AI-powered systems that analyze customer behavior and automate targeted marketing. Such innovations not only reduce the need for large teams but elevate the guest experience. In this dynamic industry, innovation and adaptability are the keys to success.
