Thirteen years in the hospitality technology industry have taught me one fundamental truth: the best use of technology in hotels is not to replace the human touch but to enhance it. Over the years, I’ve overseen IT operations for properties ranging from boutique urban hotels to large conference resorts, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. From installing keyless entry systems in business-focused hotels to integrating sophisticated property management systems (PMS) and point-of-sale (POS) systems for sprawling resorts, my journey has been a constant exploration of how technology can serve both staff and guests more effectively.
Fast forward to today, and I am embarking on an exciting new adventure: opening a premier luxury resort in South Florida. This project is the culmination of lessons learned over the years, merging technology, luxury, and timeless hospitality in a truly unique way. Here, the stakes are higher, the expectations are loftier, and the challenge is clear: to leverage the best modern technology without losing the soul of personalized service that defines luxury hospitality.
Luxury Hotels: Enhancing, Not Replacing, Human Connection
In the world of luxury hospitality, every detail matters—from the plush feel of the linens to the warm smile of a concierge who remembers your name. Technology, in this realm, must tread lightly yet purposefully. It’s not about dazzling guests with gadgets or automation for its own sake; instead, it’s about meeting guests where they are and responding to their needs with precision and care.
For instance, some guests may delight in using a sleek app to control every aspect of their stay, from booking spa appointments to adjusting the lighting in their room. Others may prefer the reassuring touch of calling a staff member who can make thoughtful recommendations or accommodate a special request. The beauty of modern hospitality technology is its ability to cater to both, seamlessly bridging the gap between high-tech and high-touch service.
Balancing Innovation with Tradition
The art of integrating technology in luxury hospitality lies in striking a delicate balance. Guests in this segment are often seasoned travelers who value the conveniences of modern innovation and the timeless elegance of traditional service. As a result, our approach combines cutting-edge advancements with a deep respect for hospitality’s roots.

For example, while our property boasts smart room controls, they are intuitive and designed to complement— not complicate—the guest experience. With our custom-developed app, guests can control the lights, temperature, blinds, and televisions. However, for those who want to disconnect, all these functions can easily be controlled in the room through simple-to-use panels and remotes. From that same app, they can order room service, book spa or dining reservations, or request laundry or maintenance services. They can also call or visit our concierge desk to make these requests. All these services and features, whether requested via the app or in person, are backed by our highly trained staff, always ready and willing to meet our guests’ needs wherever they are.
Meeting Guests Where They Are
One of the most exciting aspects of luxury hospitality is its diversity. Our guests come from all walks of life, bringing an equally diverse range of expectations and needs. Some arrive seeking total digital detox, relishing the simplicity of handwritten notes and face-to-face interactions. Others embrace technology wholeheartedly, expecting instant gratification through app-based room service and AI-powered travel recommendations.
Our mission is to adapt and cater to every guest, regardless of where they fall on this spectrum. By leveraging data responsibly, we can create personalized experiences that feel organic and intuitive. Whether surprising a returning guest with their favorite bottle of wine or ensuring a family vacationer has access to child-friendly entertainment, technology empowers us to exceed expectations without compromising authenticity.
The Future of Luxury Hospitality Technology
As technology continues to evolve, the opportunities for enhancing luxury hospitality are boundless. However, the guiding principle remains unchanged: technology should be a tool, not a replacement for human connection. It’s this harmonious blend of innovation and tradition that defines the future of our industry.
On our South Florida property, this ethos is our north star as we build a place where old-school hospitality and new technology meet to provide guests with a level of service that delivers on the true meaning of feeling cared for. Because at the end of the day, luxury isn’t only about opulence, convenience, or around-the-clock service—it’s about ensuring people feel seen, important, and at home, no matter how far they’ve traveled.
